The North American International Auto Show

For 2024, Consumer Reports places great emphasis on reliability when determining their top 10 vehicles, a crucial aspect given the rising costs of cars.

According to Jake Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, the latest vehicle selections from the magazine coincide with the increasing availability of electric cars from various automakers, including EVs and plug-in hybrids. Out of this year's top-rated vehicles, seven are either partially or fully electric, with the most reliable ones being manufactured by renowned automakers.

In 2023, the average age of cars on American roads reached a new high of 12.5 years, according to a report by SP Global. This increase can be attributed to a combination of factors, such as inflation and higher interest rates, which have made it more costly for Americans to buy new vehicles. According to federal data, the prices of new cars have risen by 21% since January 2020, before the onset of the pandemic.

According to Fisher, when it comes to purchasing a car, consumers prioritize factors such as reliability and safety over steering performance or drag race capabilities. This was determined through a general survey of consumer preferences.

He emphasized the significance of having a reliable vehicle, stating that due to its expensive nature, it is crucial to have one that is hassle-free and will not leave you stranded on the roadside while trying to resolve any issues.

Top Electric Cars

The list for the top 10 choices in 2024 also consists of numerous reasonably priced vehicles, with initial costs below $30,000, significantly lower than the mean cost of a new car which stands at approximately $48,000. The selection also comprises seven eco-friendly cars, including an electric vehicle, four hybrid cars, and two plug-in hybrids.

According to Fisher, the market is rapidly evolving when it comes to electrification with a growing number of hybrid and plug-in hybrid choices available.

The current year's top choices consist of only three models that were already named as winners in the 2023 publication. These models include the Subaru Forester, Toyota Camry Hybrid, and Ford Maverick/Maverick Hybrid.

In 2024, Consumer Reports released its brand report card for 34 automakers, evaluating their road-test scores, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction data, and safety across all tested models. BMW claimed the top spot with a score of 82, while Subaru and Porsche tied for 2nd place with scores of 80 each. On the other hand, Jeep received the lowest score of 46.

Consumer Reports has released its top picks for 2024 vehicles below.

Subaru Crosstrek: A Subcompact SUV

The Subaru Crosstrek, priced at around $25,000, is considered one of the most affordable vehicles on CR's top 10 ranking.

According to Fisher, these vehicles are highly efficient in terms of fuel consumption and also provide great comfort. They are overall a great choice at a reasonable cost, offering a four-wheel-drive SUV that is both easy to handle and provides a comfortable and quiet ride.

Subaru Forester: A Compact SUV

With a starting price of approximately $27,000, the Subaru Forester is considered to be a bigger car compared to the Crosstrek. It is also one of the top choices on the list of vehicles that are priced below $30,000. This all-wheel drive vehicle has been included in CR's top picks for the year 2023.

According to Fisher, the Toyota Prius was launched in the U.S. in 2000 with a starting price of approximately $28,000. Although there are now more attractive and eco-friendly car choices, it continues to be a trustworthy option for buyers.

According to him, many individuals purchased the Prius due to its environmentally friendly features, however, it is no longer considered the most eco-friendly option in the current market.

At the North American International Auto Show, the 2024 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid vehicle was on display.

The Prius may attract customers who prefer to use the battery charge for city driving, without the added concern of finding a charging station for longer journeys.

According to Fisher, while it is possible to commute daily without consuming any fuel, there is no need to worry about charging anxiety when going on a trip.

The starting price of the Prius Prime, which is the plug-in hybrid version of the Prius, is higher than the regular Prius, priced at $32,350.

Compact vehicle: Mazda 3

With a starting price of approximately $24,000, the Mazda 3 sedan stands out as a highly recommended option for 2024 that is relatively budget-friendly.

Midsize Hybrid Car: Toyota Camry

One of CR's top picks, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, has a starting price of approximately $29,000 and was included on its 2023 list.

According to reports, Toyota is expecting to achieve an all-time high profit for the previous fiscal year, largely thanks to the strong sales of its hybrid vehicles. The image above shows a Toyota Camry hybrid being sold at a dealership in Chicago, Illinois on February 6, 2024.

According to Fisher, the Camry is renowned for its dependability, comfort, and smooth driving experience. However, the hybrid version also offers increased fuel efficiency, with Toyota advertising an estimated 52 miles per gallon for the car.

According to Fisher, this vehicle is like a Swiss army knife because of its versatility, and I have a great appreciation for it.

Tesla Model Y: The Electric Vehicle

According to Fisher, the Tesla Model Y is priced at approximately $44,000 and was included in the list primarily due to Tesla's supercharger network, which provides convenient access for owners to recharge their vehicles while on the road.

The Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, featured a Tesla Model Y on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. The image shows the car on display, with the event's logo visible in the background.

According to him, while the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a solid option, there is plenty of strong competition in the EV market. However, what makes Tesla stand out is its unique access to superchargers.

Midsize SUV: Toyota Highlander Hybrid

According to Consumer Reports, the initial cost of the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is approximately $41,000, which puts it in a higher price range compared to other options. This vehicle has the capacity to accommodate seven to 8 individuals, depending on the specific trim level, with the inclusion of a third row of seats.

According to Fisher, the large three-row SUV offers an impressive 35 miles per gallon, making it unbeatable. Additionally, the vehicle features all-wheel drive and provides a spacious and cozy interior.

This feature ensures that owners do not have to worry about finding a charging station during longer trips. In Fisher's words, the plug-in hybrid can be a stress-free option for traveling.

Toyota RAV4 Prime: A Hybrid SUV Plug-in Model

The electric powertrain of the all-wheel drive Toyota RAV4 Prime, which has a starting price of approximately $44,000, allows for a driving range of around 42 miles. Similar to the Camry, the RAV4 also receives high ratings for its comfort and reliability.
